What If Char Aznable Never Lived to See the One Year War?
One of the more interesting discussions I recently came across on Reddit asked a deceptively simple question:
What would have happened if Char Aznable had never lived to see the One Year War?
At first glance, it might seem like a relatively minor change. After all, Char begins the original Mobile Suit Gundam as little more than a Zeon officer assigned to reconnaissance duties. However, the more I thought about it, the more I realized just how much of Universal Century history depends on Char’s actions both before and during the events of the One Year War. Without Char’s reconnaissance mission to Side 7, the events surrounding the RX-78 Gundam likely unfold very differently.
One detail that is easy to overlook is that Gene’s decision to attack was influenced, at least in part, by Char’s aggressive initative in prior encounters with the Earth Federation Forces. If Char is not present, there is a good chance the mission proceeds exactly as it was intended. The Zeon reconnaissance team investigates the colony, confirms the Federation’s mobile suit development program, and withdraws without incident.
As a result, Amuro Ray never finds himself inside the cockpit of the Gundam.
The civilians aboard White Base never become soldiers overnight. Bright Noa never finds himself commanding a warship while barely out of his teens. Most importantly, the Earth Federation loses access to one of the most valuable sources of combat data produced during the entire conflict: Amuro’s experiences piloting the RX-78.
This point alone could dramatically alter the course of the war.
The Federation’s mass-produced GM mobile suits were influenced by data gathered from the Gundam’s combat performance. Without Amuro’s growing experience and the vast amount of battlefield data generated by the White Base campaign, the Federation’s mobile suit development program could have progressed along a very different path.
At the same time, Zeon may find itself in a stronger position than many people realize.
Without Char, Garma Zabi likely survives. If Garma survives, there is a reasonable chance that Dozle Zabi survives as well, given that his eventual death came while attempting to stop the Federation’s advance, where he fought against the Gundam. The internal politics of the Principality could develop very differently if several members of the Zabi family remain alive throughout until the end of the conflict.
That said, I am not entirely convinced that Zeon ultimately wins the war.
One of the defining characteristics of the One Year War is the enormous disparity in resources between the two sides. Zeon possessed superior mobile suit technology and enjoyed a number of spectacular early victories, but the Earth Federation still controlled a much larger industrial base, a larger population, and significantly more resources.
Even with better leadership and fewer internal political struggles, sustaining a prolonged conflict against an opponent of that size would have been extremely difficult.
The war would likely last longer. Casualties would almost certainly be higher. Mobile suit development on both sides would follow a different trajectory. Yet the underlying reality remains unchanged: Zeon would still be fighting a war against an opponent with vastly superior resources.
For that reason, I suspect the most likely outcome is neither a complete Zeon victory nor a decisive Federation victory, but rather some form of negotiated settlement.
Interestingly, I could see Degwin Zabi eventually attempting to negotiate with General Revil, recognizing that the war cannot continue indefinitely. In the original timeline, many of the events leading up to that moment are shaped by the deaths of Garma and other key figures. If those losses never occur, perhaps negotiations take place under very different circumstances and much earlier than they did originally.
What fascinates me most about this scenario is how much influence a single individual can have without necessarily being the most powerful person in the room.
Char never commands soldiers . He is not a member of the Zabi family. He does not control the government. Yet his actions directly and indirectly shape countless events throughout the Universal Century. Remove Char from the equation and suddenly everything from the fate of White Base to the political future of Zeon begins to look very different. This is one of the reasons why I enjoy projects like GQuuuuuuX so much.
The Universal Century timeline is filled with fascinating “what if” scenarios, yet they are never explored in depth.
What if Char never reached Side 7? What if Garma survived? What if Amuro never piloted the Gundam?
Each question has the potential to reshape decades of Universal Century history. Perhaps someday Sunrise will explore more of these alternate histories. Until then, they remain some of the most intriguing unanswered questions in all of Gundam.
