Ace Attorney: The iPhone Edition Review

The Ace Attorney series is back once again, except this time it's going to take a bite out of the big Apple.

Wait a second, hold it, what's this? An Ace Attorney game released on something other than Nintendo? Yup, the Ace Attorney series, with its cast of zany characters, loud outbursts of “Objection!”, finger wagging, and its outrageous flair for dramatic character reactions is hitting the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad.

Ace Attorney: In need of a jolt of animation

Miles Edgeworth is not pleased to know he's not animated... yet

It has always struck me as a little odd that Capcom hasn't capitalized on the popularity of their Ace Attorney franchise as they should have. For a series that has sold just shy under 3 million copies across 5 games for the Nintendo DS (2.96 million) around the world it's really surprising that Capcom, known for having a plethora of Street Fighter animated works produced, hasn't gone down the obvious route and hired an animation studio, such as Studio 4°C which produced the Street Fighter IV: Ties that Bind short film, to animate an Ace Attorney series. There is easily enough material, from the 5 games, to create at least a 26 episode series and even more should they decide to create new cases and content, such as the stories covered in the official Ace Attorney comic, yet Capcom hasn't made the most of this opportunity.

Steve Jobs and the D: All Things Digital Conference

Steve Jobs, the Apple CEO and co-founder, kicking back at the D: All Things Digital Conference

Last night, at the eighth annual D: All Things Digital, hosted by The Wall Street Journal, Steve Jobs came out to be interview by the renowned journalist, Walt Mossberg, of The Wall Street Journal, and another colleague, Kara Swisher, a technologist for the Wall Street Journal. The interview last just slightly over an hour and a half and had Steve Jobs fielding questions regarding the on-going saga over the lost iPhone prototype which was sold to Gizmodo, Apple's stance on Flash and the on-going "feud" Adobe has perpetuated against Apple, Google, the App Store and about the future and present of Apple's latest gadget, the iPad.

Ace Attorney: A Brief, Initial Review

It’s funny how even in this modern age of gaming, in which we have highly polished and detailed 3D graphics mimicking real life, that there are still several great games out there that are still using 2D graphics that not only can entrap a gamer into playing it over and over again but launch a successful franchise. There are some games, such as the Disgaea series, where the gamer replays the game due to the immense epilogue content in the form of dungeon crawling and extra bosses to battle or additional, multiple endings, and then there are story-driven games like the Ace Attorney franchise.

The Return of I’m a Mac and I’m a PC

I was starting to wonder when, not if, Apple would respond to those silly Microsoft Laptop Hunter ads and lo and behold, 2 more have come out, via 9to5mac.com and Youtube, both of which counter the Laptop Hunter ads. The first one, called Top of the Line features our 2 regulars and a lady looking to buy a laptop when PC suggests the top of the line PC played by Seinfield veteran actor David Putty whereas the second is titled Surprise. It's funny they have an actor who has worked on Seinfield previously as the ads featuring Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfield kicked off the whole advertising campaign that Microsoft has launched. The funniest bit about the Microsoft ads is that, well, for the most part Microsoft is a software company, much like EA Sports or Square Enix, and they do not make computers, whereas Apple does, funny no? Hit the jump for the first ad from the new set from Apple.

Programming Frontier: Objective C – Journey to the Core

Originally posted: 05/14/2009

In one of my first blog entries here I wrote about my interest in learning to code in Objective C as a result of my devoted adoration of Apple and their products. Since then I have been going through my Objective C 2.0 book (written by Stephen Kochan) and struggled a bit with understanding some of the more abstract concepts. I reached about 60% of the way through the book when I put it down and decided to find some other means of learning Objective C while playing to my strengths for learning. I had come across some tutorials hosted by Cocoa Dev Central and Theocacao and read through a few of them. I found the tutorials to be quite informative but lacking in information about programming directly for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Then it came to my attention that Stanford University was offering an iPhone development course and was going to be provided copies of the lecture slides and video recorded lectures via their website and iTunes. Although the videos themselves are long (and large in size, about 500-600 MB each and an hour in length) I have gone through the first lecture and half of the second lecture and I think I finally found the material I have been looking for, for learning Objective C for the iPhone!

Quick (this time I am serious, it’s quick) Note on Notes.app (iPhone)

Whatever Apple's guidelines for User Interfaces for their OS is and the group of individuals responsible for it are a group of elegant, amazing people! (Johnathan Ive is one such person, IMHO, he is THE MAN)

I have an iPod Touch and iPhone, I like keeping track of small notes here and there, be it how much I need to pay for my Visa, Line of Credit, or other debts. Most of the time I find myself using the built-in Notes application, which works fine, however I feel it is inadequate for me when I start wanting to list stuff I need to get done. I realize I could (and probably should) just make use of the Calendar application or one of the free to do list and money/account tracker applications for what I need, but the ones I have used simply feel inadequate. This is one of the many reasons (and ideas) I have for iPhone development, to make a multi-purpose task manager/sticky notes application that I would want to use on my iPhone or iPod Touch.

Programming Frontier: Learning Objective C

Originally posted: 04/16/2009, originally posted as Learning Objective C.

Since roughly the end of January and start of February I've been plowing through Stephen Kochan's Programming in Objective-C 2.0 book with the hopes of learning Objective C (a first for me, I still have yet to know enough of a programming language to consider myself "fluent") to develop for my favourite platforms, the iPhone and the Macintosh Operating System.
